Brynne Madway11/8/2018 Brynne Madway joined us for a skype-lecture and Q&A discussing the importance and legal specifics of free speech on college campuses. It was a lively event and we hope to have Brynne visit Reed in person to continue the dialogue sometime in the future.
What is free speech? When does free speech cross the line into hate speech? Should we care about first amendment rights--and if so, why? Join us for a Skype session with Brynne Madway, a lawyer who works on first amendment issues on college campuses with FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), for a discussion of all of the above followed by a Q&A session. As a Staff Attorney in the Stand Up For Speech Litigation Project, Brynne helps to challenge unconstitutional speech codes at colleges and universities throughout the country. Brynne’s been a vocal advocate for free speech since grade school and has wanted to help protect others’ free speech rights since she participated in the Van Vleck Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition while in law school. Brynne is barred in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In her spare time, Brynne enjoys playing a variety of RPGs, needlepointing, and knitting, when her cats, Hydra and Toothless, do not demand her attention.
